Magnets and DNA Separation

Our station will be centered around magnets and DNA separation: Participants will be able to use magnetic wands to “rescue” and sort molecules, which will model how scientists can use magnetic tools to pull DNA or other materials out of a sample. We also plan to run a real gel electrophoresis demonstration so visitors can see how DNA fragments are separated and visualized in the lab. The activity will be flexible, visual, and self-paced so that participants can engage in whatever way feels comfortable, whether that is hands-on sorting, watching the gel demo, or just asking questions.
